Tendring Council has suffered a £2.8 million Government cut in its spending power when Chelmsford (a richer borough of about the same size population) got away with only £1.8 million. To add insult to injury, Brentwood Council, which has been less careful with its money in recent years, got off more lightly too. This means that Tendring residents are not only subsidising richer areas in Essex, but wasteful ones too.
On Christmas Eve, the four Opposition group leaders on Tendring Council wrote an open letter to the Local Government Minister, Eric Pickles, to ask why Tendring District has suffered greater cuts in government grant than a comparable, but more prosperous council like Chelmsford. Not only does this translate into £1 million less a year to spend on local services, but also Tendring's residents have taken the brunt of the cuts in the first two years of the four year deficit reduction period.
