Tendring Council uses a butcher’s axe to cut its budget

A huge number of Tendring residents are now being savagely squeezed between the disproportionate cuts unfairly imposed on the District by the Conservative-led Government (see “Pickled” article elsewhere) and the inadequacies of their Conservative-led Council in anticipating and dealing with them.

Despite having two years notice, they wasted time, opportunity and tax-payers money and, by their own admission, are still only 15% into the process.

To see if you or members of your family are affected, here is a more detailed list of those excessive cuts and fee increases.

Voluntary Sector

The proposed cuts and excessive fee increases will hit very many of our residents hard, in particular targeting the more vulnerable sections of our community. In particular, up to £400,000 of simple and effective annual support to the Voluntary Sector has been lost – support that has helped hundreds of organisations and thousands of our more vulnerable residents.

Over the years, Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST), with the aid of Tendring District Council grants, has supported or worked alongside the organisations listed below.

Many will face great difficulties in face of the cuts being imposed by the current administration. Once again, follow this link to see if you or family will be affected by those cuts in the name of the ‘Big Society’.

To add insult to injury, TDC’s Conservative Administration is now dressing up deep annual cuts to the Voluntary Sector as a large, one-off give-away and has now apparently been praised by Eric Pickles, the Government Minister, for doing it.

The centre piece of the Cabinet’s controversial budget announces a £500,000 ‘Big Society’ Fund. However, a closer look shows that it has major strings attached to it. In essence, you have to help the Council cut its budget. Most people would think that officers and leading councillors like Council Leader Neil Stock and Deputy Leader Peter Halliday are already well paid enough to do that.

Nearly four years ago (when in opposition), they led complaints that TDC’s Small Schemes Fund (where councillors could obtain grants for their local communities) was not fair and not transparent.

In response, the Tendring First-led Administration restructured and simplified the fund, adding money to the total so that each councillor had £2,000 a year to spend in his or her ward each year. To see the impact of this very simple and popular scheme, and to see who has spent what on which of very many voluntary organisations, follow this link to TDC’s website. Please note that this scheme will now cease.
